ANANTAPUR: Frequent counselling and gram sabhas conducted by the police to the kin of naxalites resulted in the surrender of 10 Maoists, including a dalam commander, a deputy commander, dalam members and militants before the Additional SP (OSD), G. Vijay Kumar, here on Wednesday. Giving details of the surrenders, the OSD told newspersons that discontentment with the party's functioning had made the Maoists surrender. He called upon Maoists to join the mainstream and lead a peaceful life. Among the surrendered, Pothulaiah alias Srikanth (22) of Kurugunta in Anantapur rural mandal, was the commander of the Ramagiri dalam. He was attracted to the naxalite party when he was studying SSC at Anantapur. He first became a member of the Radical Students' Union. Pothulaiah said he left the party for personal reasons. He is a suspect in some 25 criminal cases, including murder of two police constables, Chandra and Subhan, Nuthimadugu MPTC, Akkulappa, Pedda Kondapuram sarpanch, Adinarayana and three others, claymore mine attack on the then Anantapur MP, K. Srinivasulu, in 2004, famine raid, irrigation guest house at Peruru and others.
Key Maoists
David alias Bujji (23) of Shaikshanipalli in Uravakonda mandal, deputy commander of the Papaghni dalam (Cuddapah), Pedda Balu Naik (26) of Kattakinda thanda in Kanaganapalli mandal, dalam member and Jagadish alias Madhu (17) of Nasanakota in Ramagiri mandal, Ramagiri dalam and action team member were key Maoists. Besides, Krishna alias Shivananda (36) of Gantimarri, cell secretary, Venkataramudu alias Shiva (36) of Eguvapalli, Muthyalu (22) of Nasanakota, Anil (18), Sanna Muthyalu (35) and Karrenna (20), all of Madapuram, are from Ramagiri mandal. Mr. Vijay Kumar said they were able to expose the violence being unleashed by naxalites by conducting gram sabhas and explaining to the kin the threat to the lives of those leading underground life. He alleged that more than dalam members it was sympathisers living in villages, who were resorting to extortion, settlements and other criminal activities.
