ALAPPUZHA: "The organised power of the students in the State had humbled the arrogance of the Oommen Chandy Government," Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said here on Wednesday. Mr. Vijayan was speaking to presspersons after visiting Democratic Youth Federation of India workers under treatment in Alappuzha Medical College for injuries suffered in Monday's police lathi-charge during a march to the District Education Office. He said the CPI(M) was accepting the assurance given by the State Government that the fees collected from students admitted in merit seats in cooperative medical and engineering colleges would be equal to those charged in Government-run institutions. The Government had a tradition of breaking its promises, he added. Mr. Vijayan warned of more strong protests if the Government backtracked from its promises. All sections of people in the State had wholeheartedly supported the strike of students, and that was one of the reasons for its success. He said the violence unleashed by the police against the striking students was unprecedented. The willpower of the students prevailed over it. Mr. Vijayan also visited the Alappuzha Sub-jail where DYFI workers arrested for allegedly causing damage to the education office are lodged. The CPI(M) State committee members M.A. Baby and P.K. Chandranandan and the Centre of India Trade Union leader P.P. Chitharanjan were present. Mr. Vijayan later participated in a meeting of the CPI(M) in the Purogamana Kala Sahitya Sanghom at the party's district office.
