KANCHEEPURAM: The Maraimalai Nagar police used `mild force' to disperse a mob which gathered in front of the station on Wednesday morning demanding immediate release of four persons arrested in connection with a hut burning case at Potheri near Kattankulathur. According to the police, Kethu, Gowrishankar, Amalraj and Ethiraj, all residing at and around Potheri, were rounded up by the Maraimalai Nagar police on Tuesday on the charge of setting fire to huts put up by a group of Potheri colony people on `poromboke' land near a temple, on Monday night. Demanding their release, a group led by the district secretary of a political outfit, Perumal of Ammanpakkam gathered in front of the police station. When the police tried to persuade the mob, stones were thrown at the police and windshield of a police jeep was damaged. Subsequently, police used mild force to disburse the demonstrators. Later 14 persons, Perumal were arrested.
