NEED-BASED DHARNA: Members of the Students Federation of India holding a dharna in front of the administrative office of the NEKRTC protesting against the increase in the bus pass rates, in Gulbarga on Wednesday.
GULBARGA: Members of the Students Federation of India (SFI) on Wednesday staged a dharna in front of the administrative office of the North-Eastern Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC) in protest against the increase in the rate of students concessional bus pass and the conditions stipulated by the authorities for issuing the passes. In a memorandum submitted to the Managing Director of the NEKRTC, the SFI president, Sharanappa Saidapur, and its secretary, Sunil Ambalagi, said the decision of the Government to increase the rates of the bus passes by 35 per cent was unjustified.
Sharp increase
The memorandum said that according to revised bus pass rates fixed by NEKRTC, the undergraduate and postgraduate students would have to pay Rs. 610, students pursuing law courses should pay Rs. 810 and the students pursuing research courses would have to pay Rs. 1,060 for passes. The increase comes as a shock to students who are hard hit by the revision in the fee structure in colleges.
Confusing rules
The SFI demanded that the Government should instruct transport corporations that student passes should be issued on the basis of receipt issued by respective colleges. Although the advertisements given in newspapers state that the college fee receipt was enough to obtain passes, the officials insisted on residential certificates from the respective gram panchayats, a photocopy of ration card and an attestation by the gazetted officer. The Government should ensure that the students travel by buses for 40 km. without any conditions using the bus passes.
