NEW DELHI: Muslim organisations have condemned Tuesday's attack at Ayodhya and demanded a high-level probe.

In a statement, the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board appealed to the people to keep the peace and communal amity and not let the forces responsible for the attack succeed in their diabolic design.

"The terrorist act is the result of some deep-rooted conspiracy which the board condemns in the severest words and demands that the Government set up a high-level enquiry to expose the conspiracy and the forces behind it," its convener, S.Q.R. Ilyas said.

He demanded stringent action against those who were issuing irresponsible statements, which could arouse communal tensions.

All-India Milli Council general secretary Mohammed Manzar said the slain terrorists should be identified at the earliest, and demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation probe.

The council said the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh Government should ensure that peace was maintained. It was necessary at a time when the Muslim community was taking part in social development. "Such dastardly incidents do not serve the cause of Muslims; rather these can prove beneficial to those organisations which were opposed to the community," Mr. Manzar said.

The Jamaat-e-Islami Hind demanded a fair investigation and urged the Government to maintain law and order. Secretary-general Mohammed Jafar appealed to all citizens to render futile the efforts made by some "unwanted and poisonous statements" in the context of Ayodhya.

Congress leaders K. Rahman Khan and Ahmed Patel appealed for peace and harmony. Mr. Khan, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman, said the nation should unanimously condemn the incident and the people should maintain unity. In his statement, Mr. Patel, political secretary to the Congress president, urged the Government to beef up security at all prominent temples across the country. He said the country was determined to fight the scourge of terrorism at all costs.
