Two-decade-old land scam unearthed

Probe affected as maps, documents go missing

MAHOBA: A two-decade old land scam running into crores of rupees has been unearthed in this district of Central Uttar Pradesh.

District Administration sources said that the scam dates back to 1980, when Mahoba was a Tehsil of the larger district of Hamirpur. Land mafia in collusion with revenue department employees grabbed land worth crores of rupees, after doing away with the original maps of Mahoba city and at least six nearby villages.

Even the graveyards, temples, mosque land and places of historical importance were not spared by the unholy nexus, sources added.

Taking the matter seriously, the district magistrate (DM) Ravindra has ordered a thorough probe into the entire matter.

But the investigations have hit a major roadblock with various documents missing including original maps, their copies preserved at Hamirpur district headquarters and Revenue Records Centre in Roorkee. Besides the charge register of Lekhpals posted at the Tehsil during the scam period and the Bandobasti register of Municipal council were also found missing.

Admitting a massive scam, DM Ravindra said here yesterday that loss of maps and charge registers of Lekhpal establishes a racket with influential land mafia and many government employees involved.

Tehsildar Gyaneshwar Prasad, who is investigating the case, said as many as six revenue department officials suspected to be involved in the scam have been identified so far and action was being initiated against them. Mr Ravindra said that all those involved in the scam would not be spared at any cost. -- UNI
