`Glory of India' award for Mayor

Rajahmundry: The Mayor, M.S. Chakravarthi, is going to receive `Glory of India' international award on July 9.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr. Chakravarthi said that the India International Friendship Society, headed by the former Air Chief Marshal N.C. Suri had communicated to him last month about his selection for the award. - Staff Reporter

Farm worker drowned in well

Kakinada: A farm worker, Yagapati Buchireddy (40), who went to the fields in Kalvacherla village of Rajanagaram mandal on Tuesday night, accidentally slipped into a well and drowned.

His body was fished out on Wednesday. - Correspondent

Applications invited for scholarships

CUDDAPAH: The Islamic Development Bank at Jeddah invited applications for scholarships from professional students by September 26, secretary of the Muslim Association, Syed Maqbool Hussain Basha, said in a statement on Tuesday.

Muslims studying MBBS first year, B.Tech, BUMS, BAMS, BHMS, B.Ed., M.Ed., polytechnic, pharmacy and nursing should apply to the Student Islamic Trust, Jamianagar, Delhi, he said. Prescribed application forms could be obtained from the Muslim Orphanage office, Madras Road, Cuddapah, he said. - Staff Reporter

Forest officials seize red sanders

CUDDAPAH: Forest officials seized 200 red sanders, worth Rs. 5 lakhs, being clandestinely transported in a lorry at Kolimimitta village in Tsundupalle mandal on Wednesday.

The lorry, carrying the contraband covered with mangoes, was abandoned at Kolimimitta due to breakdown.

On getting information, the Forest Ranger, Siddhaiah, and his staff seized the material and the lorry. - Staff Reporter

Two electrocuted

CUDDAPAH: Two brothers were electrocuted in Rameswaram village of Porumamilla mandal on Tuesday night.

Kade Bala Obaiah (30) was electrocuted when he came in contact with an electric wire dangling from a pole after he switched off a single phase transformer when sparks emanated due to friction. When Bala Obaiah's hands and shoulders got burnt, his cousin, Chinna Obaiah (28), who tried to hit him with a stick, too got electrocuted when he slipped and fell on him.

Medical employees' plea on PRC report

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Medical Employees' Union has demanded immediate publication of the Pay Revision Commission (PRC) report as a number of demands, which have financial implications, are linked to it.

G. Ramchander, president, and K. Krishnamacharyulu, general secretary, in a statement issued on Wednesday accused the Government of avoiding settlement of issues raised by the union pending submission of the report.

They said the office-bearers would meet here on July 10 to chalk out a programme of action. - Staff Reporter

Cloud-seeding brings rain

HYDERABAD: The State Government has claimed that the cloud-seeding operations undertaken over Ranga Reddy, Mahabubnagar and Nalgonda districts on Tuesday resulted in rain at the following six places:

Balanagar (2.2 mm), Balmoor (4 mm), Markapur (5.2 mm), Doma (2 mm), Pargi (1.4 mm) and Pudur (5 mm).

The aircraft, linked to the radar recently installed at Ibrahimpatnam, took off from the Hyderabad airport at 4 p.m. and undertook cloud-seeding operations for an hour.

RTC buses back on the road

Nellore: After three days of ordeal, the RTC passengers were relieved when bus services were back on Wednesday evening at the main complex, Nellore, in accordance with direction of the High Court. The members of Joint Action Committee have informed that full normalcy has been restored in respect of all services.

Free eye camp at Madanapalle

MADANAPALLE: The Gayathri Arsha Vidyamandir Trust and Akhila Brahmana Seva Samakhya will conduct a free eye camp on July 9 at Mayuri Kalyana Mandapam here, according to the organisation president, Y.S. Prakash Rao. IOL operations for needy patients would be conducted in Chennai by Sri Sankara Eye Care Hospital. The member of Andhra Pradesh Vaidya Vidhana Parishad, D.T. Reddy will inaugurate the camp.

AISF enforces school bandh

CUDDAPAH: AISF and AIYF activists enforced a bandh of private educational institutions in Cuddapah town on Wednesday, decrying collection of exorbitant fee. The AISF activists went round the town closing down private schools and colleges. The AISF district President, N. Narasimhulu, the town President, N. Venkatasiva, and the AIYF town Secretary, K.P. Madduleti, alleged that managements of private schools were collecting hefty donations and also not providing proper amenities. They threatened to intensify the stir if the district administration fails to initiate action against them.

Institute withdraws hike in tuition fee

KURNOOL: The secretary of St. Joseph's Educational Society, C. Rojamma, said there was no hike in the tuition fee this year. In a statement, she said the hike was only Rs. 50 per month, which was withdrawn after the parents consulted them.

Impostor flees with gold ornaments

CUDDAPAH: An impostor, posing as a police constable, duped a woman and fled with 10 tolas of gold ornaments in Sangham street in Vempalle town on Wednesday. Lakshmi Devi complained to Vempalle police that an unknown youth, claiming to be a policeman, came to her house on Wednesday alleging that they possessed stolen gold ornaments.

When her daughter-in-law, Krishnaveni, showed the ornaments, the impostor demanded production of bills for the same and even as the women went inside to get the bills, the miscreant fled with the jewellery.

Sarpanch draws ire of officials

ELURU: The Darbhagudem gram sarpanch in Jeelugumilli mandal, Khursu Hanumantha Rao, has drawn the ire of the district administration for serving notices on non-tribal land occupants allegedly in contravention of 1 of 1970 Act.

The Joint Collector, B. Ramanjaneyulu, visited the village and asked the Jangareddygudem RDO, A. Sriramachandramurthy, to recommend to the District Panchanat Officer disciplinary action against the sarpanch.

According to information, the sarpanch served notices on 20 occupants seeking restoration of the occupied land to legitimate tribals. He convened a gram sabha on Tuesday evening in his capacity as executing authority for prevention of land alienations in scheduled areas.

The tribal activist, T. Trinadha Rao, condemned the action of the Joint Collector and contended that the gram sarpanch was empowered to prevent alienation of lands in scheduled areas. - Staff Reporter

Vanamahotsavam launched

VIZIANAGARAM: The Minister for Forests, S. Vijayarama Raju, launched the 56th Vanamahotsavam by planting a sapling on the premises of the Maharajah Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) here on Wednesday.

One killed in clash

Kakinada: One person was stabbed to death and another injured in a petty quarrel in Peddapuram on Tuesday night. Kante Veerabhadrarao, 32, succumbed to stab wounds at a corporate hospital here on Wednesday. __Correspondent
