Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet, on Wednesday, decided to extend the Akshaya scheme to Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Pathanamthitta and Kollam districts.

Briefing presspersons after the Cabinet meeting in the evening, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the project would become functional in the seven districts in August, and each of them had been put under a Minister.

The Ministers were K.K. Ramachandran (Kasaragod); K.C. Venugopal (Kannur); M.K. Muneer (Kozhikode); Dominic Presentation (Thrissur); V.K. Ebrahim Kunju (Ernakulam); Adoor Prakash (Pathanamthitta); and Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan (Kollam).

The Chief Minister said that the Cabinet had decided to give advance clearance for creation of 42 posts in three Government medical colleges in preparation for the enhancement of 50 seats in each of them.Mr. Chandy said the Cabinet had decided to allow 17 aided B.Ed. colleges to have 37 additional posts to maintain the teacher-student ratio at 1:12.5 as directed by the Centre.

Enhancement of posts would not be necessary in Government-run B.Ed. colleges as the ratio could be maintained with redeployment of teachers, the Chief Minister added.
