Former police officer killed in road accident

TAMBARAM: A retired Additional Superintendent of Police was killed when the motorcycle on which he was travelling was hit from behind at a pedestrian crossing by a speedingtipper lorry at Kathipara roundabout on Wednesday.

Police identified the victim as Rajangam (65), a resident of Velachery. He was travelling along with a friend, Sriram, on the motorcycle to Guindy. They halted at a pedestrian crossing on the GST Road.

While Mr. Sriram escaped with minor injuries, Mr. Rajangam was admitted in a critical condition to a private hospital, where he succumbed to injuries.

The St. Thomas Mount police are investigating.

Chain snatched

A four-sovereign gold chain was snatched from a woman at MMTC Colony, Nanganallur on Wednesday. Police said Vijayalakshmi, an employee of Indian Airlines, was returning home when motorcycle-borne youth snatched the chain and fled.

The Pazhavanthangal police are investigating.
