COIMBATORE: The Hindu Newspaper In Education (NIE), designed to empower the knowledge of students, was inaugurated on Wednesday at G.D. Matriculation Higher Secondary School for students of Class VII, VIII and IX. This year, 50 matriculation schools including those on the outskirts would be covered. Last year the programme catered to students from Class VI to X. The first session for all sections was `Know Your Newspaper (KYNP). For students who had already undergone KYNP, the first session would be Sustained Silent Reading (SSR). Class VIII students of G.D. School undertook SSR session on the inauguration day. Apart from learning what the crest of The Hindu meant, the students were also asked to read articles on page 1 of the newspaper. The resource person from Prism Books, an NIE partner, took the students through various activities like Five Finger Test that would help students keep track of difficult words. The exercise was aimed to enrich vocabulary of students. Various modules of the NIE such as language skills, general interest modules and other theme-based modules adopted a fun way of teaching, which includes story telling, and activity based learning. A total of 14 qualified resource persons have been appointed.
