Bangalore
FOR THOSE keen on a career in speech and hearing pathology, Bangalore has one more institute: Samvaad Institute of Speech of Hearing in Hebbal, which was established recently. The institute offers a three-year degree course Bachelor in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (BSLPA). The course is spread over six semesters followed by internship for one year. It consists of two core subjects (Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology), allied subjects (Psychology, Linguistics and Electronics) and medical subjects (anatomy, physiology and neurology). The course prepares a student to be an audiologist, who diagnoses hearing problems and is responsible for fitting of hearing aids. They work closely with children with cochlear implants. Speech-language pathologists are involved in identification, assessment and treatment of communication disorders. These may range from speech problems in children to difficulties in speaking that are a result of strokes or head injuries. Speech-language pathologists treat stuttering, poor clarity of speech and voice problems. Audiologists and speech-language pathologists are required in hospitals, academic institutions, speech and hearing centres, hearing-aid companies, integrated/special schools, industries (as industrial audiologists) and medical colleges. Candidates with at least 50 per cent marks in the pre-university or 12th standard examination in any three subjects from Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computers and Mathematics can apply. Here is what the institute authorities say about the career potential: "In India, the field is young and has untapped opportunities. Job opportunities have increased significantly, and there are tremendous potential and growth prospects. Persons who have completed the course have excellent opportunities overseas." More information on the course and job opportunities is available on phone (55351150).
