Clerk in Army accused of cheating job aspirants

Lance Naik allegedly cheated 17 youths from Andhra Pradesh

BANGALORE: The Bangalore police have arrested a clerk in the records section of the Indian Army on charges of cheating 17 youths from Andhra Pradesh of Rs. 15 lakhs by promising them jobs in the Army.

The police gave the name of the person arrested as Lance Naik Vijay Kumar B. Patil (29) of Kammanahalli here. The Commercial Street police arrested Patil and seized Rs. 5.7 lakhs in cash and Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP) worth Rs. 2.5 lakhs.

The police said Patil had allegedly taken about Rs. 90,000 each from 17 youths, all from farmer families in Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh, promising them jobs in the Army. The youths had come here to attend selection for recruitment to the Army, which was held at Karnataka-Kerala Sub-area office on Cubbon Road in the first week of June. Patil conducted physical examination and allegedly issued fake appointment orders, the police said.

Youths arrested

The youths, who went to the Army training centre in Dehradun to report for work, were arrested by Army officials for having gone there with fake appointment orders. A police team from Bangalore has gone to Dehradun to apprise the Army officials of the case and obtain release of the arrested youths, the police said.

During the investigation, the police found that Patil was assisted allegedly by one of his colleagues, Sharma. The police have sought the help of the Army officials to arrest Sharma, who was transferred to Siliguri from here recently.

The police seized Rs. 5 lakhs from Patil's bank and post office accounts and Rs. 70,000 from his house. Parents of the job aspirants had sold their agricultural lands and paid the money to Patil, the police said.

The investigation was conducted by a team led by the Commercial Street Inspector, Babu Naronha, and comprising Sub-inspector Siddagangaiah; head constables S. Anjinappa, Puttalingaiah and Krishna Murthy; and constables Ramesh, Subramani, Rabbani and Lokesh.
