Alleged robbers arrested

NEW DELHI: Two young men who allegedly committed a robbery at Sarai Rohilla on Tuesday have been arrested by the North Delhi police.

According to the police, the robbery took place at Hindustan Petroplast Company, from where two criminals took away Rs. 7.15 lakhs at gunpoint. It was also reported that the assailants overpowered the company peon, Munna Mandal, and tied his hands and legs before fleeing away.

However, during interrogation, Munna allegedly confessed to having stage-managed the robbery in connivance with his cousin, Shatrughan. At his instance, the police arrested Shatrughan and recovered the money.

Heavy rain

lashes Capital

NEW DELHI: The Capital received 23.4 mm of rainfall during the day on Wednesday as heavy rain lashed Delhi and the adjoining areas. With the cloud cover over the region likely to stay for at least another couple of days, more rain is in the offing in the Capital over the next 24 hours, the weatherman said.

The continuous rain during the past two days has resulted in a steep fall in mercury as the day temperature remained seven degrees below normal at 28.5 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the heavy rain resulted in waterlogging in several areas affecting smooth flow of traffic mainly during the morning and evening rush hours. Areas that were badly affected due to water-logging included Anand Parbat, Tilak Nagar, Gazipur, Paharganj, Peera Garhi, Mangolpuri, Azad Market, Sultanpuri, Najafgarh and Moti Nagar. The sharp showers also hit various stretches along the busy Ring Road.

Five sentenced

NEW DELHI: Five in-laws of a woman who drove her to commit suicide by constantly harassing her with dowry demands were convicted by a court here today.

Additional Sessions Judge Lal Singh sentenced two brothers-in-law of the woman -- Amrit Singh and Kuljeet Singh -- to seven years imprisonment while her husband Tejender Singh Mann sisters-in-law Mohinder Kaur and Manjit Kaur were awarded two years of rigorous imprisonment.

The court also imposed fine ranging from Rs 2000 to Rs 5000 each on the convicts.
