Letters to the Editor
I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation for the concern the BJP has shown for the plight of Imrana who was allegedly raped by her father-in-law. What is not clear to me is where the BJP and its cohorts were when Muslim women were being raped and burnt in Gujarat? Or is their concern for Muslim women new found? But one must appreciate the good when one sees it. Hence the letter of gratitude.
Mirza Yawar Baig,
* * * So much has been said in the media and by women's organisations in the Imrana case. The Shariat, it has been alleged, is outdated and anti-women. But they should understand that the fault does not lie with the Shariat but with the wrong interpretation of it by a local religious body.
Azeez Khan,
* * * There is a fundamental difference between dowry deaths, sati and female foeticide, and the fatwa issued on Imrana (Letters, July 6). Whereas all the former acts are punishable by law, the latter enjoys immunity under Personal Law. No one supports dowry deaths or sati but we find someone as high ranking as a State Chief Minister unwilling to oppose the fatwa. Even the victim has agreed to abide by it.
T. Srinivasan,
