Conscience & corruption

The article "Conscience, the defence against corruption" (July 7) is timely and relevant. The role of conscience as enumerated in the interaction between President Abdul Kalam and the Jain Muni is thought provoking. It is a wake-up call to the conscience.

The article made me recall the story of the robber-turned-saint Valmiki, who searched his soul to distinguish between right and wrong. The observation that a corrupt person can never be a role model even to his own children should be taken seriously.

C.P. Velayudhan Nair,
Kochi, Kerala

Every survey shows India ranking high in the list of corrupt nations. But there is a problem in dealing with corruption spiritually. If money (such as tips and gifts) is paid voluntarily and wishing one well, it is OK with the conscience. So are institutionalised express systems — a fee for speedier acquisition of passports, faster clearance in banks, and so on. The underlying principle is the same in everything, getting things done fast for a fee. It requires committed action with support from Governments and politicians to eliminate corruption.
