dated July 8, 1955: Geneva meet: PM's hope

Prime Minister Nehru said in Brioni Island (Yugoslavia) on July 7 that he was hopeful of good results at the Big Four summit conference opening in Geneva on July 18. He said that when he was in Moscow recently he got the impression from Soviet leaders that they wanted a reasonable solution of the German and other problems. Answering questions at a press conference before his departure for Italy after a seven-day State visit to Yugoslavia, Mr. Nehru said he thought the Geneva conference should discuss the Far East, especially Indo-China and Formosa, in their broad aspects. Turning to Germany, he said India naturally felt that at some time or other Germany should be unified. Otherwise she would be a running sore. He hoped Germany's unification would be achieved peacefully and by a negotiated settlement. Mr. Nehru reiterated his plea that People's China should be admitted to the United Nations.
