J&K Rifles for U.N. peace mission

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: 13 Jammu & Kashmir Rifles, one of highly decorated battalions of the Army, has been nominated for the United Nations peacekeeping mission to Ethiopia and Eriteria.

The battalion was awarded two Param Vir Chakras (PVC), the nation's highest award for gallantry during war, for its role during the Kargil conflict. Captain Vikram Batra (posthumous) and Rifleman Sanjay Kumar were awarded PVCs for the assault on enemy positions in Drass. The battalion also won eight Vir Chakras and 14 Sena Medals for the operation in the Drass and Mushkoh areas.

According to the then Chief of the Army Staff, V. P. Malik, the forward movement by 13 JAK Rifles along with 2 Rajasthan Rifles, 18 Grenadiers and 18 Garhwal Rifles on the mountaintops of Kargil — one of the most difficult terrains in the world — was a turning point in the conflict and thereafter Pakistani positions fell one after another.

Now being commanded by Col. S. V. Bhaskar, 13 JAK Rifles also performed well in the recent counter-insurgency operations in the northeast.
