For once IBM will have nothing to do with computers. Spelling out Infrastructure Building for Minds and Markets (IBM2), instead of International Business Machines Corporation, IBM2 deals with software of the celluloid kind. A series of seminars, conferences and discussions that will run parallel to the "Osian's-Cinefan: The Seventh Festival of Asian Cinema'' starting next week, IBM2 hopes to give viewers a window into the world beyond the screen. From film philosophy to idealism as well as economic aspects of the movie-making business like marketing, the seminar brings to the Capital actors, directors and producers together on one platform for the first time. A new addition to the film festival, the objective of IBM2 is to create an understanding about cinema so that the unconventional is more acceptable. A perfect platform to broaden horizons about cinema, some of the speakers include veterans film-maker Mani Kaul, Cannes Film Market director Jerome Paillard as well as the script-writer of "The Rising'' Farrukh Dhondy. Kicking off the series of lecture that offer a serious view on cinema with a focus on Arab cinema on July 16, IBM2 will also have a lecture on Iranian cinema and a talk on "the Old New Wave" in Indian cinema. There will also be a lecture on restoring the legacy of Satyajit Ray 50 years after his first film "Pather Panchali''. While IBM2 might sound like a dream come true for serious film-buffs, the idea is to move "festival" movies out of the narrow confines of the regular "intellectual" audience to a larger number of people so that they are willing to experiment. -- Mandira Nayar
