INTO CYBERSPACE: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy handed over the matter for the Encyclopaedia Photo: S. Mahinsha
The State Institute of Encyclopaedic Publications has put in place a five-stage plan using IT for the benefit of Malayalam language. The project has been named Mission Malayalam. The plan is to bring out five software that would make Malayalam more computer-friendly. The first such software has been named "kaveri'. This would contain the fonts for Malayalam in the old and new scripts, allow spell-check for Malayalam text in computers and provisions for text-management. The next stage would be the software `Periyar' that would allow grammar-check of Malayalam text and text-to-speech conversion. The `Pamba' software would take the plan one stage ahead and would enable users to carry out speech-to-text conversion and the conversion of Malayalam manuscripts into printed text. The final state of Mission Malayalam would be the software `Ganga' that would allow machine-translations of Malayalam, Hindi and English. Mission Malayalam was inaugurated by the Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Wednesday.
