HONOUR FROM THE PAST: Writer Kovilan being felicitated by the National Cadet Corps in his house at Kandanassery, near Guruvayur, on Wednesday.
The renowned writer Kovilan, who recently won a fellowship of the Kendra Sahitya Akademi, was felicitated in his house at Kandanassery, near Guruvayur, on Wednesday. What made the event unique was that officers of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) had organised it. O.A. James, Director-General, NCC Kerala-Lakshadweep, presented a plaque and a shawl to Mr. Kovilan. Mr. Kovilan had served in the military and had worked as NCC training officer at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He said he would cherish the presents given by the NCC officials more than the fellowship. "The military had provided salary to me for quite some time, and deep inside me, I am sobbing when I notice that the senior uniformed officers from that wing came in search of this 83-year-old me. But I restrain those sobs, for I have to, because I am a soldier," he said. Brigadier James said that by honouring Mr. Kovilan, the NCC was honouring itself. NCC Ernakulam Group Commander N. Mohandas and Venkita Raman, colonel, spoke.
