CHENNAI: They were bold, brilliant and beautiful. They were the 10 finalists who participated in the Horlicks whiz kids team. A jubilant foursome was eventually selected to participate in the national finals of the Horlicks quiz contest to be held in Bangalore in November. After passing the written elimination round, there were 25 in the interview round and from among them there were 10 finalists, said F. Tabassum, business head of Activity, which organised the school fest. Kamarajar Arangam was full with school students clapping hands and cheering the participants.
11,000 students enrolled
Syed Sultan Ahmed, Managing Director of Activity, said 11,000 students enrolled for the programme in Chennai alone and there were three million whiz kids throughout the country. Lakshmi Rai, actress, Avinesh, model, and Udayakumar, film maker, were the judges and they along with Mr. Syed, asked questions to test the contestants' ability to manage stress in the versatility round, revolving around the life skills required for students as put forth by the World Health Organisation. When Ms. Lakshmi asked Brindalakshmi, "If I give power and money and ask you to choose one, which would you choose." "Power," was the immediate answer. "With money, I may not be able to get power. But with power, I can get money!" Anusha, who wants to become a lawyer or a dancer, was asked to express in Bharatanatyam, something she wanted to convey to the judge. And the participant who described herself as "cute," did a mudra and abhinaya to show that the judge - Ms. Lakshmi was very beautiful.
In the juniors category, Pavan Kapnadak from Kola Saraswathi, Priyanka Shah from Doveton Corrie were selected for the finals and were presented with Horlicks Wiz Kids sash. In the seniors category, Brindalakshmi from Vidyodaya and Anusha from Bala Vidya Mandir were selected for the finals.
