KOLKATA: All six candidates for the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal, including Sitaram Yechury and Brinda Karat, both members of the polit bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), were elected uncontested here on Thursday. The returning officer said that there was no need to hold the elections originally slated for July 14 as there were no other candidates in the fray for the six Rajya Sabha seats from the State. The day was the last date for withdrawal of nominations. Chittabrata Mazumdar, another polit bureau member of the CPI (M) and Abani Roy of the Revolutionary Socialist Party were the other two Left Front candidates who were re-elected for a second successive term. Trinamool Congress candidate Swapan Sadhan Bose and the Independent candidate Arjun Sengupta, who was supported by the Left Front and the Congress, were also declared elected. Election certificates were being issued to all the elected candidates, said the officer.
