New tank to be ready within two months

INSPECTION: The Collector, Rajesh Lakhoni, inspecting the construction of a new tank across the Pachilainachiamman stream near G. Kallupatti in Periyakulam taluk.

THENI: Construction of a new tank across the Pachilainachiamman stream near G. Kallupatti village in Periakulam taluk would be completed within two months as 80 per cent of the work was over, said the Collector, Rajesh Lakhoni.

Inspecting the work being taken up at an estimated cost of Rs.1.38 crores here on Wednesday, he said that the Pachilainachiamman stream, which originates from southern slope of the Palani Hills, has been flowing on the declivity of the hill and reaches the plains in G. Kallupatti.

Catchment area of the tank was 2.672 sq.km and the expected yield from the catchment area was 34.78 mcft. The annual storage was 13.33 mcft.

The tank, with a storage capacity of 4.6 mcft, would serve an ayacut of 160 acres of irrigated dry crops in the village with 780-km-long right flank channel and 480-m-long left flank channel.

Formation of new tank bund for a length of 465 metres including weir to store about 4.6 mcft of water was over. Construction of a surplus weir for a length 24 m to dispose maximum flood of 86.217 cusecs with forest boundary wall for a length of 120 m to avoid forest submersion was also completed.

About 16.65 acres of patta land and 3.19 acres of Poromboke land had been acquiesced for this purpose.

Mr. Lakhoni said efforts were on distribute Rs.7.70 lakhs as compensation to land owners. He held discussion with officials to convert cart road connecting the village and tank site into black top road.

On completion of the tank, water level in drinking water and irrigation wells in and around the G. Kallupatti would increase considerably. M. Selvararajan, Assistant Executive Engineer, and Junior Engineer, S. Kadiresan, accompanied him.
