National Education Assembly from today

Leading educationists in the country to attend

KOZHIKODE: Leading educationists in the country, including Yashpal, former Chairman of the University Grants Commission, will be here to attend a national seminar on education from July 8 to 10. The programme, National Education Assembly, is being organised by the All-India People's Science Network and the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to discuss the Union Government's proposed educational reforms. NCERT Director Krishnakumar is among the participants.

Nearly 600 delegates will attend the programme, the organisers K. Sreedharan, A. Achyuthan and C.P. Narayanan, president of the network, said at a press conference. The seminar comes at a time when the NCERT is engaged in reformulating the national curriculum framework and syllabi. Also, a Bill on school education is before Parliament.

The programme will be at the Jubilee Hall at Kandamkulam and Zamorin's Higher Secondary School. An exhibition on education in Kerala will deal with the current educational scenario in the State. After Prof. Yashpal inaugurates the National Education Assembly, Jayanti Ghosh of Jawaharlal Nehru University will give a presentation on "Education in the changing global order." Vinod Gaul of Delhi University will speak on "Education, knowledge and development."

Education in relation to social justice, gender, community participation, examination reforms, private participation, children with special needs, Dalits and Adivasis, internationalisation, environment, research and development, campus politics, minority rights and communalisation of textbooks are among the topics to be discussed.

The organising committee has brought out a book, Politics of Education, as part of the preparations for the event.
