Canara Bank forces

a draw

BANGALORE: : Namdhari XI and Canara Bank played out a 5-5 draw in the Deccan Herald Super Division league hockey tournament here on Thursday.

In a match that went with each team slotting goals in quick succession it was Namdhari that scored first through Harbhajan Singh in the tenth minute. Canara Bank's Somanna was quick to level the score within two minutes.

The action shifted towards Namdhari and Joga Singh broke through the Bank defence in the 14th minute. Canara Bank fought back and Apanna sounded the boards within sixty seconds.

Namdhari wrested the advantage in the first half with Gurcharan Singh converting two penalty corners, the first in the 21st minute and again eight minutes later.

Joga Singh pushed the lead up to 5-2 five minutes after the interval and Namdhari seemed to be heading for a convincing win. But Canara Bank showed good resilience as Ronald Kiran scored off a corner in the 45th and a minute later K.P. Dinesh brought the bank just a goal shy of the Namdhari.

John Verghese scored with just four minutes to go and ensured an honourable draw. Canara Bank may well have won but a penalty stroke taken by Kaveriappa was saved by Namdhari's goal keeper Harjinder Singh.

Earlier Sports Authority of India beat Army Service Corps 2-1. Varun Chinappa (18th) and Nilesh (37th) scored for SAI, while Harpreet Singh scored ASC's only goal.
