HYDERABAD: An improved showing in competitions for the Kaul Cup, the symbol of supremacy in inter-railway sports, will be top priority for Varun Bharthuar, who has taken over recently as president, South Central Railway Sports Association (SCRSA). With this in view, the Senior Deputy General Manager, Vigilance will also seek to expedite fresh recruitment to various teams to represent South Central Railway (SCR), not just for Inter-railway but also for Inter-institutional and National competitions. About 38 sportspersons are to be inducted at headquarters and six each in the zone's six divisions.
Weak links
He said an exercise was on to identify the weak links in SCR's various teams which would then be strengthened by induction of new sportspersons. For instance if an off-spinner was required for cricket, the search would be restricted only to a player of such skill, either through talent spotting or advertisements. A tentative sports calendar was also being drawn up, he said. SCR already has an impressive list of international sportspersons including Olympian J.J. Shobha and other internationals such as S. Geetha, Indian women's cricket captain Mithali Raj, former national volleyball captain Ravikanth Reddy and accomplished chess player, P.D.S. Girinath. Secretaries (discipline-wise): Badminton, ball-badminton: Dr. K. Prahlad, Senior Medical Superintendent. Basketball, kabaddi: A.K. Khandelwal. Cricket/table tennis/swimming: U.
