Gang of cheats busted

Two held for selling fake gemstones

CHANDIGARH: A gang of criminals, involved in cheating foreign tourists in Manali and Jaipur, has been busted by the Chandigarh Police with the arrest of two gang members here today.

The Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of the Chandigarh Police arrested Alok Sharma and Shahidudin who had cheated a British national by selling him fake gemstones for Rs 2.34 lakhs, Superintendent of Police (EOW) Dinesh Bhatt told newspersons here. The duo had lured Mel Ashley Barton of UK who had come to Manali in June by offering him gem stones at very less rates. They brought him to a Chandigarh showroom in Sector 22 where they sold him cheap gemstones which they promised to mail him to London. When, on his return to UK, Mr Barton did not receive the gems he came back to India and registered a case with the Chandigarh Police. Police, on a tip-off, arrested the duo today when they brought another victim Leyland Richard Beaumont of the US to the same jewellery shop with the same motive.

The SP said the two accused, along with their accomplices Ram Manohar and Ashiq Ali, were running a jewellery shops in Manali and Jaipur. They operated in Manali during the peak tourist season from May to July and thereafter shifted to Jaipur, he added. -- UNI
