Garbage clearing: Corporation to involve residents

P. Sudhakar

"Since many houses segregate garbage, the task has become more effective"

TIRUNELVELI: The Corporation, which has roped in members of women self-help groups to improve garbage-cleaning exercise, has decided to involve residents' welfare associations within the corporation limits. Though the 1.30 lakh-odd houses in the town generate 145 tonnes of garbage everyday, only 100 tonnes could be cleared due to lack of manpower in the conservancy workforce. Against a requirement of over 1,500 conservancy workers, the corporation has only 700 personnel — 45 per cent of the actual requirement — , which badly affects cleaning operations. Owing to the government's temporary ban on recruiting new staff, the corporation finds it very difficult to manage the situation.

With 45 tonnes of garbage accumulating everyday, the urban body has sought the assistance of 130 self-help group members two months ago to carry out the garbage cleaning operation. As the initiative yielded better results, the Commissioner, D. Chandrasekaran, contacted some of the residents' welfare associations to further strengthen the programme.

Accordingly, he identified 12 associations, which have appointed staff for garbage clearance. While the corporation gives Rs.5 for clearing garbage from each house, the welfare associations provide an equal amount to be given as salary for its workforce. The conservancy workers of the residents' welfare associations are now taking care of clearing garbage generated in as many as 2,012 houses. Since most of these houses segregate degradable and non-degradable garbage at source, clearing of waste has become more effective.

Encouraged by the results, Mr. Chandrasekaran recently held discussion with the representatives of more than 25 residents' welfare associations to appoint more staff for garbage clearance in their areas.

Since the representatives who attended the meeting are convinced by the Commissioner's presentation, some more associations are expected to join hands in the garbage cleaning exercise.
