No threat from rising Yamuna

Special Correspondent

Haryana's assurance to Delhi

CHANDIGARH: Following the incessant rainfall in North India, the flow of water in the Yamuna reached 1.35 lakh cusecs on Wednesday before reducing to 47,000 cusecs on Thursday, according to the Haryana Irrigation Minister, Ajay Singh Yadav.

He told journalists on Thursday that the Chief Minister had approached Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for construction of Kishau Dam across the Yamuna so that the water that goes waste during monsoon could be used for irrigation and drinking purposes.

The Haryana Governor, A.R. Kidwai, had also written to the Union Government in this regard, he said and added that there was no danger of flood to Delhi after the release of water from Tajewala. Still, the authorities there had been duly alerted.

Captain Yadav claimed that so far there had been no loss of life due to floods but reports of damage to property had been received from Yamunanagar, Jind and Rewari. The flood waters in Yamunanagar had been diverted to the Son river. People residing along the Ghaggar, Markanda and Tangririvers had been alerted in view of heavy rains in the catchment area.

He assured everyone that the flood control centres, set up in all the districts, were functioning round-the-clock.

The Financial Commissioner, Irrigation and Revenue, and all Deputy Commissioners had been instructed to deal with any flood situation promptly and ensure immediate relief to the affected people.

Rail traffic restored

Meanwhile, the Khairthal-Alwar railway track damaged due to heavy rain in Rewari district has been repaired and the traffic restored, according to the Deputy Commissioner of Rewari, Mahender Kumar.

The Rewari-Phulera railway track near Khori Kund has also been set right, he added. He said 15 villages in the district were facing a flood-like situation. The power and communication systems in two villages had almost failed.

Detailing the precautionary measures taken to control the flood situation he said rain water had been drained with the help of pumps and the officials of the Irrigation Department had been directed to check the flow of water in various canals.

Arrangements had been made by the District Food and Supplies Department to provide necessary commodities like kerosene oil, food items, drinking water and electricity to the people of the flood-affected villages.

The Chief Medical Officer, Rewari, had been directed to send medical teams to the flood-affected villages to check outbreak of any disease.
