CHENNAI: The State secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), N. Varadarajan, said on Thursday that the party, in consultation with allies, would go on a strike in the delta districts of Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Thanjavur in the third week of July for immediate release of adequate Cauvery water to the State. It was aimed at urging the State Government and the Centre to hold talks with the Karnataka Government, a party resolution said. Mr. Varadarajan said in a statement that the resolution was adopted at the two-day State Committee meeting, which concluded here on Wednesday. Karnataka's refusal to release Cauvery water as per the interim award of the Cauvery Tribunal and the recurring drought affected kuruvai and samba cultivation, the resolution said. The lives of over 1.5 crore farmers and agricultural workers had been affected. This year too water had not been released from the Mettur dam on June 12, the schedule date. Even as the people in the delta expressed apprehensions about agricultural operations, the level in the reservoirs in Karnataka was rising, thanks to a vigorous southwest monsoon.
