Correction

In the news report, "Order immediate release of Cauvery water: Jayalalithaa urges Manmohan Singh," (dated July 7, 2005), it was inadvertently stated that Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The letter was addressed to Karnataka Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh. The error is regretted.

In a letter to The Hindu, Ms. Jayalalithaa said the report indicated that she had recalled the discussion she had with Dr. Singh in New Delhi during the National Development Council meeting on the release of water from Karnataka.

"I wish to point out that the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh presided over the meeting of the National Development Council at New Delhi. In my letter, dated 6.7.2005, to Shri Dharam Singh, I have referred to my meeting with Shri Dharam Singh at New Delhi during the meeting of the National Development Council. It seems as though a goulash of a report has been featured in The Hindu.

"This erroneous report of The Hindu should be corrected immediately so that your readers are not misled in any way with regard to the efforts made by me to secure Tamil Nadu's rightful share of Cauvery water by approaching the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Karnataka, on whom lies the primary responsibility of releasing Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu," she said.
