Road mazdoors stage novel protest

Special Correspondent

The protest is in support of their demand for reinstatement

CHENNAI: Road mazdoors owing allegiance to the Tamil Nadu Highways Road Employees Association launched a "begging agitation" here on Thursday in support of the demand for their reinstatement.

The association president, M. Shanmugaraja, and general secretary, M. Marimuthu, said in a statement here that several road mazdoors who participated in the agitation, were arrested.

Preventive custody

A large number of the road mazdoors were taken into preventive custody on the eve of the protest programme, they alleged.

The next phase of the struggle would be launched in the neighbouring States of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala and the Union Territory of Pondicherry on August 15 to highlight the demand for reinstatement of all the sacked persons, they said.

The State secretary of the Communist Party of India, D. Pandian, in a statement, demanded the immediate release of the arrested persons while urging for their reinstatement.
