Staff Reporter

Named after M.L. Jaisimha, the stadium has latest field turf

  • Fitting tribute to Jaisimha, says Bedi
  • Harsha Bhogle stresses need to ensure quality
  • Academy will facilitate playing of cricket all through the year

EX-CAPTAINS MEET: Former cricketers, Bishen Singh Bedi and Mohd. Azharuddin, greet each other at the launch of the M.L. Jaisimha Cricket Academy in Hyderabad on Thursday.

HYDERABAD: It was a meeting of hearts. From the former India captain, Bishen Singh Bedi, to the most familiar face in cricketing circles, Mohd. Azharuddin, to a well-known cricket commentator, Harsha Bhogle - everyone lined up to attend the formal launching of a unique indoor cricket stadium - M.L. Jaisimha 365 Academy - in Sikh Village here on Thursday.

Not to be left behind was Jayanthi Jaisimha, wife of the illustrious cricketer, in reminding the audience that the academy, with the latest field turf, would facilitate playing of cricket throughout the year.

"Jaisimha believed that only the best should play and always stressed that only the right attitude will take one a long way in his career," she recalled.

Mr. Bedi, a contemporary of Jaisimha, said that the late cricketer thoroughly deserved an academy named after him. "Such was his cricketing intelligence. He was one of the most respected personalities I had ever come across in my career."

He hoped that the academy would cater to the needs of the deserving, besides providing entertainment value to corporate groups.

"And, this facility seems to be better than the one by Elf Grover in London," he added.

Mr. Harsha Bhogle felt it was an honour to be part of the function.

"It is imperative to remember for Vidyuth (Jaisimha's son who set up the academy) that there will be no dearth of goodwill for the cricketing family. All that has to be done is to ensure quality in every aspect of the administration of the academy," he said.

    Indoor tourney

Mr. Vidyuth said that the first in the series of various initiatives, the academy would host the ML Jaisimha-Field Turf Corporate Indoor Tournament from July 29.

Also present on the occasion were S.P. Misra, former Davis Cup winner and childhood friend of the late cricketer, the Chief Secretary, Mohan Kanda, the Director-General of Police (DGP), Swaranjit Sen, and L.V. Subrahmanyam, senior IAS officer.
