Rain cools Capital

NEW DELHI: With rain continuing to lash the Capital and neighbouring areas for the second day running on Thursday, the maximum temperature stood seven degrees below normal at 28.6 degrees Celsius.

Both Safdarjung and Palam received 5.1 mm of rainfall from 8-30 a.m. to 8-30 p.m., the weatherman said.

Drug lord nabbed

NEW DELHI: One of the most wanted drug peddlers, Sharafat Sheikh, has been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police.

According to the police, Sharafat was arrested on Thursday when he was about to enter his house -- called "Bihar Bhavan" -- at Nizamuddin in South Delhi. He was found to be in possession of 500 gm of smack, a 7.65-bore Italian pistol and four live cartridges.

The police said Sharafat was involved in drug peddling for the past many years. However, he has only one case of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Prevention) Act registered against him. He had 27 other criminal cases against him and was arrested 19 times.

Killers arrested

NEW DELHI: Two allegedly contract killers of the Shaukat Pasha-Suleman gang were arrested at New Friends Colony by the Special Staff of the South Delhi police on Wednesday. Two firearms, live cartridges and four mobile phones were recovered from them.

The police said the Shaukat Pasha gang consists of more than a dozen criminals, who are based in Delhi, Meerut and Muradabad.

Attack condemned

NEW DELHI: The Rt. Rev. Karam Masih, Bishop of Delhi, Church of North India and the Christian community in the Capital have condemned "the unprovoked and malicious terrorist attack on one of the most sacred religious symbols at Ayodhya".

In a statement here on Thursday, the Bishop of Delhi added: "We uphold in our prayers the security personnel who have been injured while discharging their duties to protect the sacred place."

Held on murder charge

NEW DELHI: Two persons have been arrested on charges of killing a retired Army subedar after robbing him of valuables at Dabri in South-West Delhi on June 21.

The Subedar, Ram Avtar, was found murdered in his house with his hands tied. The house had been ransacked suggesting that robbery was the motive behind the murder.

The police zeroed in on one Manish Kumar Yadav, who had gone missing after Ram Avtar was murdered. The police ultimately arrested him from his village in Haryana

and his brother-in-law, Jagdish, from Alwar in Rajasthan, after they confessed to their involvement in the murder.

Alleged robber nabbed

NEW DELHI: A 27-year-old man, who was allegedly involved in robbery cases, was arrested by the Special Staff of the North-West Delhi police on July 3. A country-made firearm and two live cartridges were recovered from him.

The accused, Sammi, was arrested at Ashok Vihar when he was planning to commit a robbery there. The police said he had committed a robbery along with his accomplices in the Wazirpur Industrial Area recently. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to his involvement in a murder case as well.
