NEW DELHI: Describing the increase in power charges for lakhs of consumers in the Capital as totally unwarranted and uncalled for, the Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday demanded immediate revocation of the proposal and urged the consumers not to pay the increased bills as a mark of protest. The party also threatened to take to the streets and bring the Capital to a standstill from Saturday if its demand for withdrawal of the new tariff order was not met.In a statement, Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan said the new power tariff hike order was another blow dealt to the people of Delhi by the Congress Government after the recent hike in water tariffs. He said ever since it took office for the second time, the Sheila Dikshit Government had only increased the financial burden on the people and upset household budgets. Dr. Vardhan said he had convened an emergency meeting of the party office-bearers and district presidents on Friday to work out a detailed strategy to take on the Delhi Government on this issue. Hitting out at Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, the BJP leader said that she had gone back on her word of not increasing power tariffs and had betrayed the people of Delhi. The Leader of the Opposition, Jagdish Mukhi, termed the hike as a betrayal of the people of Delhi.
