CHAMBA (HIMACHAL PRADESH): A landslip has blocked the Ravi river in Bharmour area of Chamba district, forming an artificial lake and triggering fears of flash floods in case of a breach. The ``artificial lake'' had come up at Holi, about 70 km from here, and a large portion of the Chamba-Nayagram road was submerged in the lake, a district official said here on Friday. People living along the banks of the river have been asked to shift to safer places, he said.
Pakistan villages flooded
PTI reports from Islamabad: Surging waters of the Chenab river which flows from Jammu and Kashmir flooded many villages in Pakistan's Punjab province, but the Government said on Friday that a threat of heavy floods has been averted. State-run PTV quoted officials as saying that India had started releasing water after giving early notice to Pakistan on Thursday afternoon. Over 5.75-lakh cusecs of water has been released so far into the Marala works on the Pakistan side, officials here said. Pakistan declared an alert after receiving the flood warning from India and pressed about 500 military personnel to carry out rescue operations. A number of villages located on the banks of the Chenab were evacuated. Now with the threat of floods receding, most of the villagers have begun returning, the television report said.
