Fishermen seek subsidised diesel

Special Correspondent

Protests planned to stress demand

CHENNAI: The recent hike in diesel price has severely affected fishing trade and unless the Central Government subsidises the cost it will be difficult for fishermen to continue the trade, according to Federation of Tamilnadu-Pondichicherry Fishermen Associations here.

The State Government was supplying 1,000 litres of diesel a month to mechanised boat owners and 300 litres for country boat owners.

But the supply was hardly sufficient. So the Centre should supply diesel at a subsidised price, the federation general secretary, N.J. Bose, told presspersons here on Friday.

If the Centre failed to make an announcement within 15 days, the fishermen would stage a dharna in front of Central Government offices.

They would also resort to rail-roko to support the demand.
