BANGALORE: The Bangalore Development Authority has said that work on the flyovers at Airport Road and Jayadeva Hospital Circle, which have been stalled because of litigation, will be resumed within the next 15 days.

The city unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party held a demonstration at the Airport Road site to draw attention to the plight of road users who are facing prolonged traffic snarls at both places. Katta Subramanya Naidu, MLA for Shivajinagar, the Shantinagar MLA, S. Raghu, and the leader of the BJP group in the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike Council, Mangala, led the protesters.

Bangalore Development Authority officials announced they had held detailed interaction with senior officials of the Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation (UPSBC) based on the directions of the Karnataka High Court. The High Court had ruled against the BDA severing the contract with the UPSBC which resulted in the work on the flyovers at two strategic intersections getting stalled for almost half a year.

New schedules

"We have discussed new schedules, terms and conditions for the projects to be taken up again. We have also revised the financial terms with the Uttar Pradesh agency and want to avoid any further delay which causes inconvenience to road users," BDA officials said.

According to the new agreement drawn up with the UPSBC, the Airport Road flyover will be completed by August 2006, including the loops and grade level roads. The main part of the flyover, connecting Airport Road, Inner Ring Road and Indiranagar 100 ft. Road, is likely to be completed and opened to traffic by June next year.

At the Jayadeva flyover, most of the work, including the underpass and service roads, are to be completed by May 2006, BDA officials said. The side ramp to Bannerghatta Road will be commissioned by March itself. The BDA claimed to have offered a monetary incentive for early completion of the flyover works by UPSBC.

Protest

Last month, several citizens' organisations held a protest at the site of the Airport Road flyover, upset over the delay in the works which was leading to constant traffic jams. This junction is used by a large number of people travelling to work in Whitefield area and those using the ring road towards the IT firms in and around Koramangala.
