MOSCOW: Russia has warned the West against interfering in Sunday's presidential election in Kyrgyzstan. "We expect these elections to be democratic, honest, open and free. Free from outside interference, among other things," a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Saturday. Kyrgyzstan is going to the polls on Sunday to elect a new President following the overthrow of former President Askar Akayev in a coup in March. The Russian warning appeared to be specifically targeted at election observers from the U.S-dominated Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and other Western organisations. Moscow strongly criticised what it said were biased judgements of Western observers in favour of pro-Western "velvet revolution" leaders in earlier elections in Georgia and Ukraine. Russia also accused Western NGOs of orchestrating the March "tulip revolution" in Kyrgyzstan. "The Russian Foreign Ministry thinks that any official statements from OSCE observers in the Kyrgyz election can be made only after consultations with the member-states of this organisation (OSCE)," spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said. The poll contested by six candidates is expected to be won by acting President Kurmanbek Bakiyev. He has teamed up with another popular politician, Felix Kulov, to prevent a dangerous split between the poorer southern clans led by Mr. Bakiyev and the wealthier northern clans represented by Mr. Kulov. Under the deal, reportedly brokered by Moscow, Mr. Kulov will get the post of Prime Minister with extended powers.
