NAMAKKAL: The need to form more self-help groups (SHGs) was emphasised by Finance Minister, C. Ponnaiyan, here on Saturday. Speaking at a function to distribute welfare assistance, he said, "At present, one lakh women are associated with SHGs. More SHGs have to be formed with the participation of a large number of women, which will improve the rural economy." He asked the officials to form more SHGs in the district. He distributed welfare assistance totalling Rs. 54 lakhs under various schemes to 1,514 beneficiaries. The assistance included a subsidy of Rs. 34 lakhs and a loan amount of Rs. 18 lakhs. The State Government was paying a sum of Rs. 30,000 crores to the Centre every year through various means. In return, the State was getting only 1.62 per cent of the amount. As Tamil Nadu was being considered as a developed State because it controlled population growth, the Centre was adopting a step-motherly attitude towards it. At the same time, it had provided liberal assistance to other States, including Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The Union Ministers from Tamil Nadu were not lobbying in New Delhi for the rightful share, Mr. Ponnaiyan said.
School building opened
He also inaugurated additional school buildings, SHG buildings and water tanks, constructed at a cost of Rs. 20 lakhs, at Vettambadi and Vagurampatti. He declared open buildings built at a cost of Rs. 53 lakhs in the Tiruchengode municipal limits.
