Staff Reporter

Stresses need for cadre-based approach

SALEM: Increasing participation of young women in women's organisations is essential for their overall development, senior police officer and Magsaysay Award winner, Kiran Bedi, has said.

Inaugurating the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the Salem branch of Indian Women's Association (IWA) here on Saturday, she said that a girls cadre, involving school and college students and working women up to the age of 25, was necessary to steer forward the activities of women's associations. "Cultivating leadership quality among these girls will help develop this movement," she said.Ms. Bedi urged IWA members to form a wing for middle-aged women also.

Discussion needed

Problems faced by young, middle-aged and senior women should be taken up for discussion regularly, based on which, the association should organise its programmes.

While interacting with the participants of the function, Ms. Bedi said, "There is nothing called failure in life. An act of yours gives you a result, which solely depends on how best you do it."

President of Indian Women's Association, Chennai, Sarojini Varadappan, Writer Vaasanthi, president of All India Women's Conference, New Delhi, Manorama Bawa and Director of Sri Sarada Educational Institutions, Yateeswari Ambica Priya Ambaa, also spoke.

President of IWA, Alamelu Sampath, welcomed the gathering. Secretary Shyamala Gopalakrishnan, treasurer Solachi Chockalingam and joint secretary Srimathi Jagannathan were among those present at the function.
