Award for T.J.S. George

KOZHIKODE: T.J.S. George, Editorial Advisor, The New Indian Express, has been selected for the C.H. Mohammed Koya Journalism Award instituted jointly by the C.H. Mohammed Koya Journalism Trust and the Calicut Press Club.

The award consists of Rs.55,555 in cash, a memento and a citation. This time, only English language journalists were considered for the award. Mr. George was selected in recognition of his contribution to value-based journalism with social commitment.

The Hindu Editor-in-Chief N.Ram, CPI(M) ideologue P. Govinda Pillai, media analyst B.R.P. Bhasker and writer Paul Zacharia were the final jury members who selected Mr. George for the award, C.H. Journalism Trust member M.K. Muneer and co-chairman K.V. Kunhiraman, said in a press release here on Saturday.

The jury considered the recommendations obtained from Malayala Manorama Associate Editor Thomas Jacob, Mathrubhumi Editor K. Gopalakrishnan, senior journalists K.M. Roy, V.P. Ramachandran, V.M. Balachandran and M.N. Sathyavrathan among others. — Staff Reporter

Assistance for kin of landslip victim

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government would sanction Rs. 50,000 as assistance to the family of Kalyani who died in a landslip at Inchipara in Kozhikode district on Thursday, Revenue Minister K.M. Mani said here on Saturday. Her body was recovered on Saturday morning. — Special Correspondent

KPCC meeting

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The first meeting of the new office-bearers of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) will be held at Indira Bhavan here on July 12 morning. In the afternoon, a joint meeting of the executive committee, special and permanent invitees, Ministers, office-bearers of parliamentary party and presidents of feeder organisations will be held at the Little Flower Hall of the Animation Centre at Vellayambalam. After that, a meeting of the office- bearers and District Congress Committee presidents will be held at Indira Bhavan. This was announced here on Saturday by KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala. — Special Correspondent

Admission to LLB course

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Applications have been invited for admissions to the three-year LLB course in the Government Law Colleges at Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Kozhikode. The admissions will be based on their performance in an entrance test to be conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE).

The test is to be conducted at Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Kozhikode on August 14. The test, which will be of three hours' duration, will include objective type questions. Applications and prospectus will be issued from select branches of Canara Bank in all the districts, from July 12. Applications, along with all the required documents, should be forwarded to the CEE before July 30, according to an official release here on Saturday. — Staff Reporter

New shopping complex

KOLLAM: An office and shopping complex constructed by the city corporation at Kadappakada will be inaugurated by Speaker Therambil Ramakrishnan on Sunday evening. Minister for Labour Babu Divakaran will hand over the keys to the tenants of the building. Mayor Sabida Beegum will preside over the function. — Staff Reporter

Financial help

KOLLAM: The Kerala Police Association district unit will distribute financial aid to the dependents of 10 members of the association who died recently. Superintendent of Police M. Sugathan will distribute the money at a commemoration meeting to be held here on Monday. — Staff Reporter

Training course

KOLLAM: The Jan Shikshan Sansthan, in association with the Karunagapally unit of Savebharathi, is organising a vocational training course for tsunami-affected people at Alapad. The course comprises classes on soap manufacturing, fabric painting, fruit and vegetable processing and candle and paper bag manufacturing. The classes to commence from July 11 will be held at the Cheriyazheekkal Kashi Vishwanatha Temple auditorium. — Staff Reporter.

Anganwadi staff plea

KOLLAM: The anganwadi employees and their family members will send one lakh letters to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy under the banner of the State Unit of the National Anganwadi Employees Union, demanding pay scale, pension and other retirement benefits. In a statement here on Saturday, general secretary of the union A. Rahimkutty called upon the State Government to hold discussions with the union on the issue of implementing an ad hoc commission report. The union wanted the Government to implement a pay scale on the models of the one implemented by the Government of Pondicherry. On Saturday morning, Mr. Rahimkutty inaugurated the letter posting campaign at the Head Post Office here. — Staff Reporter

Death anniversary

KOLLAM: O.N.V. Kurup, poet, has warned against allowing the entry of foreign newspapers into the country. He was addressing a gathering at a function organised by the Kollam Press Club to commemorate the fourth death anniversary of press photographer Victor George. The poet said that the entry of foreign newspapers would result in the erosion of our traditional values. He also said that instead of providing information on what was happening in the country and around the world, a section of the media was making news a commercial product. — Staff Reporter
