HISA awards for Rathore & Suma

BANGALORE: Shooters Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and Suma Shirur won the `Hero Indian Sports Academy (HISA) Indian sportsman of the year' and `HISA Indian sportswoman of the year' awards respectively here on Saturday night.

The Indian shooting team meanwhile won the `HISA Indian team of the year' award.

Rajyavardhan, who won the silver at the Athens' Olympics and Suma, who won the gold in the Asian Shooting Championship at Kuala Lumpur, topped a regal year- 2004 - with well-deserved awards at the Bangalore Palace, an apt venue with all the royal trappings. Rajyavardhan pipped other contenders that featured the likes of Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Anil Kumble and Vishwanathan Anand while Suma had to edge past Anju George, Sania Mirza and Anjali Vedpathak. It was also a sweet double for Rajyavardhan as the Colonel also won the `HISA Indian shooter of the year' award while warding off the challenge posted by Mansher Singh, Suma Shirur and Anjali Vedpathak.

Meanwhile Rahul Dravid won the `HISA Indian cricketer of the year' award after scoring 946 runs in 12 Tests and 1025 runs in 31 one-dayers.

The function was graced by the Karnataka Governor T.N. Chaturvedi and the Chief Minister Dharam Singh. The Hero Sports Academy Chairman Kapil Dev and the Hero Group Director Pawan Munjal honoured the dignitaries.

The other awardees are: Vishwanathan Anand (chess), Anju George (athletics), Alok Kumar (cue sports), S. Venkatesh (football), Jyoti Randhawa (golf), Adrian D'Souza (hockey), Sourav Ghoshal (HISA outstanding performance in other sports), P. Harikrishna (young Indian achiever - male), Koneru Humpy (young Indian achiever - female), Sania Mirza and Anuja Thakur (both special awards).
