NIZAMABAD: The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) on Saturday asked the State Government take action against seed companies and ensure compensation to those farmers who had sowed BT cotton as it did not germinate in certain areas of the district. Addressing a press conference here, the TDP official spokesman, V. Mohan Reddy, said farmers were facing difficulties, as quality seed was not available in sufficient quantity.
Shortage of stock
Rain too played truant all these days in the current kharif season and when there was some rain, there was a dearth of seed, pesticide and fertilizer. He said the administration failed to stock adequate amount of super-phosphate and complex fertilizer though the demand for both varieties was high. Mr. Reddy alleged that the agriculture officials were behaving irresponsibly with regard to supply of seed and in extending a helping hand to farmers in the form of advice. At least 30 agricultural officer posts remained vacant in the district, he pointed out. Contrary to its promise the Government did not take care of extending institutional loans to farmers so far, he said.
