MANGALORE: A special team constituted by the Superintendent of Police, Soumendu Mukherjee, to solve a dacoity case reported in Mangalore East (Kadri) police station limits on March 25 has arrested seven persons in this connection. The team headed by the Mangalore North (Bunder) Circle Police Inspector, Vinay Gaonkar, made the arrest. A press release from Mr. Mukherjee here on Saturday said the accused, all from various parts of Udupi taluk, mainly Kodankuru, are reportedly the associates of Dubai-based underworld don, Bannanje Raja, alias Rajendra. While Pradeep and Naveen were nabbed on Friday, the team arrested Asif, Guru, alias Guruprasad, Appi, alias Ziauddin, Mohammed Aslam and Manoj on Saturday. The team recovered two mobile phones, allegedly stolen by the gang, from Naveen and Pradeep. It also seized a Maruti 800 car hired by the gang to carry out the crime. Mr. Gaonkar said the gang had hired the car of Ajith Nayak of Kodankuru from one Ambarish Bhandary also from Kodankuru. They were produced before a court here. The accused had reportedly entered the shop of Richard Pinto here on March 25 and assaulted him. Besides damaging some electronic equipment, the accused took away mobile phones and Rs. 5,000 from the shop. The police confirmed that they have definite leads on the whereabouts of other members of the gang, who were reportedly involved in a case where they made an attempt on the life of Mr. Pinto outside his house at Morgans Gate in Mangalore South (Pandeshwar) police limits recently.
