KOCHI: A Syndicate meeting of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) held here today approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for getting upgraded into the level of an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). The DPR has included developmental projects worth Rs.450 crores. An estimate Rs.175 crores has been earmarked for re-structuring engineering education on the campus. The School of Marine Sciences will be converted into School of Marine Sciences and Technology. A budget of Rs.50 crores has been earmarked for the development of School of Marine Sciences. The science departments will receive Rs.45 crores, while the environmental sciences department will get Rs.7.5 crores. The School of Legal Studies and School of Management Studies will be developed as part of the new initiative. The Department of Hindi will be re-named as Department of Indian Languages. The Department will offer academic programmes in South Indian languages. The Department of Cultural Heritage will be re-named as Department of English and Foreign Languages. The DPR will be submitted to the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Minister for Education E.T. Mohammed Basheer. The Syndicate urged the Government to extend all possible help in upgrading the university into the level of an IIT.
