BSES joins green Delhi drive

NEW DELHI: BSES has joined the "Green Delhi" movement by setting for itself an ambitious target of planting over 2,000 saplings in its licensed area beginning Monday.

In a week-long drive, a variety of saplings including fruit-bearing trees would be planted in over 150 locations spread over a 1,000 sq. km area. The saplings have been procured from the Delhi Forest Department and comprise mostly neem, gulmohar, laburnum, jamun, sheesham, poplar, ashoka, peepal and harsingar.

The tree plantation drive will culminate on July 17 when scores of saplings will be planted by dignitaries at BSES's Urja Vihar employees' housing complex in East Delhi.

Sheila visits Jal

Board office

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit visited the Delhi Jal Board headquarters at Varunalaya on Monday.

Addressing the DJB officers and staff, Ms. Dikshit emphasised the need to ensure safe and adequate water supply to the Capital's residents during the monsoon. She also called for de-silting and proper maintenance of the sewerage system.

Tips on entrance examination

NEW DELHI: Addressing a seminar on "How To Succeed In Medical Entrance Exams: The Surefire Strategy" here over the weekend, the Managing Director of Aakash Institute, J.C. Chaudhry, sought to explode the myth that medical entrance exams were very tough and that their questions were complex and difficult to crack.

"It is a different pattern of examination, which requires different approach to understand the same subject that one has studied in school. The success lies in understanding the basic fundamentals and the need to practice," said Mr. Chaudhry.

Russia's role in war victory recalled

NEW DELHI: The role of Russia in the historic victory over Japan in World War II was recalled at a function organised jointly by the Russian Centre of Science and Culture (RCSC) and the Indo-Russian Youth Club here this past weekend.

A multi-media presentation by Sergey V. Cherkas, Head of Information and Culture, RCSC, highlighted the series of developments right from Port Arthur to San Francisco.

The presentation featured the chronology of actions against Japan in August and September 1945, including the Soviet declaration of war, the army's concentration at the Manchurian border sweeping into northern China as well as northern Korea, overwhelming the Japanese defences and surrender of Japanese forces in South China.
