Dowry behind killing of girl children, says Lakhera

Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY: : The widening sex ratio in India is a matter that needs to be taken up along with the population control programmes, said Lt Governor M. M. Lakhera.

Speaking at the World Population Day function here on Monday, he blamed the demand for dowry as primarily responsible for the prevalence of female foeticide in some parts of the country.

"In spite of various Acts and regulations, the problem of dowry continues. A girl child is killed before she is born because the parents are worried about her marriage due to demands for dowry," Mr. Lakhera said.

If the population increases at the current pace, it would have adverse impact on the economic growth , he said.

But to check population growth, the Education and Social Welfare Department needs to play a major role.

"It cannot be controlled only through family planning measures. People have to be educated on the benefits of having a small family," he said.
