TIRUMALA: The TTD Special Officer, A.V. Dharma Reddy, on Monday said steps would be taken to ban the use of plastic in Tirumala. At a high level meeting with top TTD officials, representatives of various leading biodegradable manufacturing institutions and local hoteliers, Mr. Dharma Reddy cautioned that if plastic was not banned, the serene atmosphere at Tirumala -- which attracts more than 40,000 pilgrims everyday -- would be destroyed. As a first step in the direction, the TTD is providing biodegradable bags and covers for distribution of prasadam. He said that apart from causing harm to the environment, use of plastic also resulted in contamination of groundwater. He urged local hoteliers and shop keepers to discourage plastic useand switch over to biodegradable goods. The senior water analyst, Srinivasa Deekshitulu, and health officer, Radha Krishna Murty, were prominent among those who participated in the meeting.
Clarification over church
Our reporter from Hyderabad says the State Bharatiya Janata Party president, N. Indrasena Reddy, has asked the Tirumala Tirupati Devastamans Chairman, T. Subbarami Reddy, to clarify on the issue of construction of a church in Tirumala. In a letter to Mr. Reddy, he said the clarification was necessary in view of information received by the party that prayers would be held in Tirumala on December 25. He cautioned the Tirpati Tirumala Devasthanam against taking steps that would hurt Hindu sentiments and were seen as "psuedo-secular."
