dated July 13, 1955: Keskar on AIR programmes

Dr. B.V. Keskar, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, has called for a thorough recasting of All India Radio's programme structure to cope with the phenomenal expansion of India's broadcasting network in the last five years. Inaugurating the 29th conference of the AIR Station Directors at the Legislative Assembly Hall in Hyderabad on July 11, the first such conference to be held outside Delhi, he said that the decision to hold the conference outside Delhi would help AIR to get directly acquainted with the special needs of various regions of the country. Hyderabad with its central location was an ideal venue. In future, he said, the conference would be held in other centres. Dr. Keskar said Indian broadcasting had now reached a stage at which it was necessary to revise the programme structure. He reviewed briefly AIR's expansion and progress since 1947 when it had only six stations to the present position with 26 stations and with proposals to open more. This expansion of the broadcasting system called for an all-out effort to meet the popular demand for better and more interesting programmes. Referring to the encouragement that AIR had given to Indian classical music, he said the objective was to give the very best of classical music to its listeners.
